It’s hard to blame any community for abandoning a game with time. But when a game as ancient as Ultima Online still has a multiplayer community as large as it does, it’s even harder not to pay attention.

Ultima Online (UO) was released in 1997 and was one of the first MMORPG games in the world. Known for its extensive PvP combat system and passionate community, Ultima Online’s DNA runs rampant in most modern MMOs and is probably the oldest MMORPG that still has a genuinely active player-base.

There have been eight expansions for the game since its original release, as well as dozens of free content updates including a new game engine and improved graphics for the Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn update in 2007.

From the in-game assassination of UO’s creator (Richard ‘Lord British’ Garriott) to droves of stories about camaraderie and combat, there’s a particular charm to Ultima Online that still holds up 23 years later. Additionally, Ultima Online’s developers claim to be in the early stages developing an update, which they described as the, "biggest and boldest endeavour in over a decade."
