10 One-Off Video Game Levels That Totally Change Everything
3. Distortion World - Pokémon Platinum Version (2008)
As entertaining as they are, Pokémon games are basically all the exact same thing. You start off as a wide-eyed child in a sleepy little town, then battle your way across the region forming invaluable bonds with the Pokémon you befriend along the way until, finally, you've beaten the Elite Four and become Champion! Yay!
Not to take away from this formula at all - after all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it - but the point is that, when you boot up a new Pokémon game, the experience is mostly going to be just how you imagined.
Pokémon Platinum is no different in that regard... except for one intriguing section that sets it apart from everything else the series has ever come out with.
Once you make it to the top of Mt. Coronet, the Spear Pillar, Team Galactic's evil actions will take you into the realm of Giratina, the Distortion World, which, for all intents and purposes, is basically the Pokémon world's version of Hell.
The laws of the real world do not apply here, and navigating this treacherous labyrinth is very much like walking around in an M.C. Escher painting. There's a 'darkness' here that you just don't feel anywhere else in the series, and it both fascinates you and chills you to the bone.
