10 Open World Video Game Secrets You Never Found
9. Headless Horseman - Skyrim
Skyrim is one of the most beloved, enduring open world games ever made. Even after more than a decade since the game's original release, many of us are still finding new ways to experience and enjoy the fifth main entry in the long running Elder Scrolls series.
With a sprawling, open map filled with towns, cities, dungeons and forests, there are plenty of places that the developers could pack full of easter eggs and secrets. These are plentiful throughout Skyrim, ranging from references to Bethesda's other games to powerful hidden weapons and items.
One such secret you probably never encountered involved a ghostly apparition only visible under specific conditions. Between 10PM and 4AM, a ghostly headless horseman can be seen roaming the world, wielding a battle axe and steel plate armor.
He actually has a few lines of dialogue, including "Who dares disturb my rest?" as you first encounter him. This inclusion is a clear reference to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. If you follow, he will lead the dragonborn to Hamvir's Rest, an above-ground tomb.
The encounter is so rare because the horseman can spawn on any road in Skyrim, which means few have experienced the ghostly apparition.
