10 Opening Bosses That Totally Ruined Video Games
1. Yawn - Resident Evil Remake
I know some of you skim these things so I just want to make it absolutely clear what game we're talking about here. Not Resident Evil, Capcom's Top 5 of All Time undead-puzzle-shooter from 1996. Not the one that launched a decades-long, multi-billion dollar franchise spanning cinema, games, books, and television. Not the one credited with singlehandedly reviving the zombie obsession and that, over 20 years after its release, is still regarded as one of Japan's best cultural exports. Not that one.
What I'm talking about, is the remake. And not even the 2002 remake. The 2015 remaster of the remake that appeared as a download on current-gen consoles. That one.
You see, the thing is, Yawn was an incredible boss in 1996. It was big, it was terrifying, it turned a game that had been brooding and quietly sinister into an big action fight-for-your-life, forcing you to forget how to sneak around and instead scramble for your survival. It was everything a great opening boss battle should be.
But Yawn in the remake... could be killed... with just your knife. A 40ft snake infected with a murderous virus, that had found itself scaled back so badly you could now beat it but applying the same process you'd use to slice a loaf of bread. Abort.
