8. Asylum Demon - Dark Souls

So here's the story of the time I went out and bought myself a copy of Dark Souls. Having missed the initial release and subsequent hype train I was resoundingly assured that it was "a brutally proficient game that provides you with the most satisfying sense of accomplishment... honestly man, it will totally batter you but when you finally master it there is no greater feeling... it's just the best, you will love it". This, to me, was exciting.

So gleefully I picked it up, gave it a go and with virtually no help from the game or tangible story to guide me, I found my way to the first boss. The fabled Asylum Demon.

The challenge was, as I was forewarned, a brutal one. Memorising its moves and attacks and patterns and breaking an actual sweat to try and finally defeat the thing. Hours were spent, calories were burned, but at long, long, long last, the beast was felled. Gratefully I awaited my reward - years of playing video games having conditioned me to expect some compelling narrative revelation to spur me on through the story - but nothing was forthcoming. Nothing.

All of that. All of that stress and failure and resolve. All of it for... the sense of accomplishment? Busting my arse and thumbs not to unravel some deep mystery or glean some amazing insight into the world I inhabit. Nothing.

"Well, yeah man?", my friends tried to reassure me. "That's Souls innit! There's a bit of a story there but beating them is like... it's own reward".

Yeah, not for me, thanks lads. Sorry
