2. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - The 3rd Dimension?!
It was going to be hard making a follow up to the best Mario game of all time, Super Mario World, but they did it.
This time around players hop, skip and "Hnnnrgh!" their way through stages as one of many Yoshi's, transporting a baby Mario away from the forces of Kamek. Gameplay is mostly derivative of any Mario game prior, with the egg-ception to Yoshi's firing power.
Each Yoshi can swallow enemies and make them eggs, which can then be launched at other enemies. All of this is aimed along the 2D axis, which is easy enough. Come the end, you'll be pulling trick shots off of all sorts of angles.
That is, until the last boss. Throwing all of that easy aiming out the window, the game has players hoof eggs at a distance-closing Baby Bowser. In the background... meaning aiming and trajectory go full 3D.
No more flat-screen firing, there was an element of depth and trajectory now, all the while the impending threat was getting closer and closer. It certainly adds some danger to the whole "final boss" thing, that's for sure.
