10 Overpowered Items That Broke Video Games

3. Oddjob's Hat - 007: Nightfire

The Golden Gun was the bane of multiplayer on Goldeneye 64. It was a one-hit-kill weapon with incredible range, and its only drawback was its single bullet capacity and fairly long reload times. Despite it causing considerable grief to a lot of players, the weapon made a return in 007: Nightfire, but it didn’t come alone.

While the Golden Gun could be picked up and wielded by anyone who could find it, Oddjob’s hat could only be used by its wearer. So while a lot of people plucked to play as James Bond (or ‘Bond Spacesuit'), craftier players opted for Oddjob, since he permanently carried a one-hat-kill of his own.

Just like in Goldfinger, Oddjob’s hat was lined with a razor sharp steel rim. It didn’t have great range, and it seemed to recharge seemingly at random with no indication of when it would become usable, but it could instantly kill any player without fail. The hat effectively broke multiplayer contests, because it rendered aiming ability or skill with weapons pretty much obsolete in most encounters. Chances are, if you came up against an Oddjob at close range, there was no beating him, and the easiest way to win a game of Nightfire was to be the fastest player to pick him.

Due to animation constraints of the time, Oddjob's character model never actually removed his hat when throwing it. Presumably, he a had a whole arsenal of hats tucked away in that suit of his.
