10 PROVEN Ways To Get Into The Gaming Industry

1. If Only I Had A Little Humility, I’d Be Perfect

It took me a while to understand my limits (through physical and mental torture), and though I was a bit of a slow learner, I discovered something - people tend to treat you better when you’re eager to learn, you’re accepting of your mistakes... and you’re humble.

Earlier in my career I’d be quick to make excuses for when things went wrong. Even more recently, when I thought my way was the best way, I’d be obstinate and unrelenting instead of just accepting... “you know what? This wasn’t the best way to do that. Mea culpa. I did a bad.”

Humility is one of those human qualities that feels the hardest for perfectionists, artists, and world-weary dreamers, because we attribute the broken aspects of the world to something else so easily. But we’re quite often better off just accepting that sometimes the problem is... us.

Mistakes will be made in a game studio. That part is unavoidable. But what definitely can help is being the person who can stand up and say “that was my bug”, or “I checked that in” when something goes wrong.

It’s not just about being honest, it helps the problem get fixed quicker and you’ll come across as team-focused instead of self-serving.

Oh, PS - what do you folks reckon “humble pie” tastes like? “Humble” is a portmanteau of “hairy” and “crumble”, right? No?
