3. Fez II - The Big Fish Slipped Away

Try explaining Fez to someone normally, let alone after a few drinks, and you'll probably get a confused look back. But that's what makes Fez great: it subverted the platforming genre, as well as probably melting some brains along the way.

Games switching between the 2D/3D plains were nothing new, given Paper Mario had done it too, but there was something so captivating about how Fez achieved it that drew people in.

Gomez's adorable adventure was clearly a labour of love for Phil Fish and Polytron, as was documented in the feature film, Indie Game: The Movie. Developed over a five year period, IG:TM saw Fish constantly on edge about his baby, and rightly so.

Sadly, that passion would also lead to provocation which saw Fish effectively storm out of the industry in a whirlwind that took Fez II with it.

Cancelled one month after announcement in 2013, fans never saw anything beyond a title screen before Fish flopped off with it all.

Given that Fish owns Fez, there's no foreseeable hope of him selling the rights on.

RIP Gomez, we hardly knew ye.
