10 Reasons Super Mario World Is The Best 2D Mario Of All Time
4. The Story Keeps It Simple
The beauty of Mario games is how simple they are to just pick up and play again. The original Super Mario Bros. game set things up nicely with its hero running through worlds and levels on a quest to save the Princess from the evil Koopa King.
However, the sequels to this game would take things a bit more wild with their storylines. Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan was essentially the exact same game only with much harder levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 in North America was a re-texture of Doki Doki Panic with a strange 'it was all a dream' cop-out thrown in the mix, and Super Mario Bros. 3 made the decision to introduce kings which had been turned into strange animals to its worlds.
Super Mario World strips everything back and makes the franchise easy to understand again. Mario lands in Dinosaur Land where he learns that Princess Peach has been captured by Bowser, and then meets Yoshi who tells him that the Koopas have also stolen his eggs.
With such a simple story to digest, the game is able to focus itself more on the likes of its level design and world map, arguably the two things it has been praised for the most over the years.
