3. Creating A Vibrant Open World

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the first Mario game to introduce a world map to the series, letting players navigate Mario through the game's worlds and allowing them to choose their path to the end and the levels they play.

It's a feature that has returned time and time again in the games that have followed, however none of these past or present maps have come close to matching Super Mario World.

Super Mario World's world is easily the most interactive of any in the series, taking Mario up waterfalls, through mountains and across bridges in a breathtaking experience throughout. For the first time, a Mario game was actually dabbling in 3D visuals through its map, with this being most noticeable in the game's caves and secret parts.

On top of this, Super Mario World is a game filled with some quirky little bonuses that impact its world map. When players find some of the hidden keys across the game's levels and unlock the various Star and Special Worlds, they may begin to notice that some of the sprites and colours across the world map beginning to change.
