6. Deathloop (2021)

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Bethesda

Deathloop was a game with plenty of tricks up its sleeve that should have led to it becoming a big success. The devs, Arkane, had repeatedly proven they could produce great Triple-A titles, such as Prey and the Dishonored games. Thus, combining this studio's reputation with an intriguing time-loop, assassin-filled premise seemed like a recipe for something worthwhile.

The final product definitely lived up to this hype. It was a thrilling FPS with a great story, an engaging duo of characters in Colt and Julianna, slick gameplay, and excellent level design. Yet, as should be obvious by its inclusion here, the sales side of the coin landed very flat.

Despite the big (yet bizarrely uninformative) marketing push, the game debuted with lower numbers than their previous titles, with boxed sales falling particularly low. In fact, the physical sales were the lowest Arkane had ever seen (as confirmed via Metro), proving that the game was not meeting the standards they were known for.

While those who played the game seemed to love it, general audiences let it slip by.
