2. Alone in the Dark (2024)
Survival horror is a genre that has seen many beloved franchises rise and fall. One of the most notable is Alone in the Dark, an iconic series that arguably kickstarted the whole genre yet devolved into a hapless mess, hitting a low point in 2015 with the abysmal Alone in the Dark: Illumination.
As such, a grand revival and redemption was sorely needed, something the 2024 reimagining promised to pull off.
Everything seemed great on paper for this revival, with the impressive photorealistic graphics and duo of leading stars - Jodie Comer and David Harbour - proving that a lot of love and effort was being poured into it. Unfortunately, the game's release was mired by a lack of enthusiasm.
While the quality of the game itself wasn't great, offering mild scares and bland execution, it was still a worthwhile buy for fans of classic survival horror - the only issue being that hardly anyone actually bought it. In fact, the sales were so low that THQ Nordic's parent company, Embracer, chose to shut down the studio, Pieces Interactive.
Having an entire studio culled is one of the worst results a game can ask for, and it proves that not every classic franchise can find redemption.
