Dungeons and Dragons has been around for over 40 years. Over this time so many books and additions have come out that there seems to be no end to the writer’s imagination. Classic creatures such as beholders, owlbears, and mimics have all become favourites of the series. Everyone has an off day though. Over the course of decades of different books and editions, these are bound to show.

There have been some questionable additions to the compendium of monsters over the various releases. Some are odd, whereas others are downright bizarre. Dungeons and Dragons is part of a wide-ranging fantasy universe. It’s full of underground labyrinths and other planes of existence. Anything is possible in this world. Some of these ideas though, you wonder how they even come up with them. Some creatures are just two species mashed together, other times the creatures have no rhyme or reason.

All these monsters may be strange, but they are all interesting to look at. Do you know any other creatures that were missed on this list, why not leave a comment below to tell us about it?

10. Roper

You and your party find yourselves in an ancient cave, that McGuffin must be somewhere? You’ve done your perception checks, your all clear. Then suddenly a tentacle grabs you from the ceiling, meet the Roper.

These creatures have the powerful ability of “False Appearance.” This means that while at home in a cave they can blend in perfectly with stalactites and stalagmites. They cannot be perceived even with a search action. When they are moving, they also have advantage on stealth checks. The fact that these horrific looking beasts can be that stealthy is worrying. Looking like a giant meat mound, you wouldn’t think this was possible.

These beats evolved in the Underdark, migrating to other caves as they grow. They are also apparently very intelligent, studying history and philosophy. Some pilgrims even visit the Ropers in the hope to learn their knowledge. It is a shame then that any adventurer who sees this creature is going to kill it first and ask questions later.

They may have multi-attack, four tentacles, and a large mouth but don’t worry. They can only move 10 feet a turn. This means that with a good ranged spell or weapon these creatures could be hit all day long and not even get close. You’re just going to need to set them off first.
