10 RPG Character Deaths That BROKE You
8. Vesemir (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)
Mentor figures are as essential to grand fantasy stories as magic and swords. Having a beloved paternal figure to guide you throughout your journey, offering wisdom and advice, makes you feel like you've always got a safety blanket waiting for you somewhere. Sadly, that comes with the tragic caveat that losing them is ten times as painful. And, oh boy, they are very often lost.
Vesemir is one of gaming's best examples of this, as his presence in CD Projekt RED's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is incredibly influential on both Geralt of Rivia and you, the player. But, naturally, his life comes to a dramatic and emotional end.
During the Battle of Kaer Morhen, Vesemir makes the ultimate sacrifice, putting himself in the line of fire to save Ciri. Losing him is a devastating moment in the already fraught narrative, with his presence becoming something you sorely miss. However, the knowledge that he died as a hero is at least a comfort, which is why he sits a little higher on this list.
