10 RPG Character Deaths That BROKE You
5. Mordin Solus (Mass Effect 3)
The Mass Effect series is awash with mind-blowing characters on compelling personal journeys, with one of the most popular being Mordin Solus. This salarian scientist is a quick-talking, loveable member of the team, yet he boasts one of the franchise's bleakest backstories.
As a major player in the development of the genophage, a bio-engineered weapon designed to sterilise the Krogan race, Mordin has a lot of blood on his hands. This is something he rectifies in the third game in the most noble of ways. However, while his climactic ending is a beautiful redemption for this flawed alien, it's a total tear-jerker for the player.
In his final moments, Mordin sacrifices himself to ensure that the cure for the bioweapon he helped create is released. He does so whilst singing his popular scientist salarian song, a play on the classic "The Major General's Song" from The Pirates of Penzance, a fittingly clever yet silly detail that fits the character to a T.
Losing this charming companion is a soul-crushing moment, but knowing that he died writing his wrongs makes you feel a tiny bit better - a tiny bit.
