3. René Arnoux (Disco Elysium)
The city of Revachol - the setting for the phenomenal Disco Elysium - is a dingy place filled with unsavoury characters, an arid history, and the stench of death surrounding it. Yet, while the locals are rarely friendly to you, getting to know them is bizarrely comforting.
One particularly comforting pair is the bickering duo of Gaston Martin and René Arnoux. René, a former member of the fascist militia, and Gaston, his peaceful neighbour, are co-dependent lifelong "rivals." Every encounter you have with them spells a story of unconventional friendship as they play a game of pétanque together.
Arnoux himself is an unpleasant, yet oddly amusing, old man who cannot let go of his glory days. Despite this, his friendship with Gaston humanises and endears him to you. That's why it feels so devastating when you see Gaston sitting alone for the first time on Day 5.
Gaston reveals to you that René's heart finally gave out, leaving him alone without a pétanque partner. While he may have been a grouchy, peevish old soul, his sudden departure tears one of the few predictable comforts of Revachol away from you, and it hurts.
