10 RPG Character Deaths That BROKE You
2. Gustave (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33)
Here's a little rendition of the damn near universal reaction that players seem to have when meeting Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. First hour, "Wow, this Gustave guy looks like Robert Pattinson." After a few hours, "Okay, Gustave is incredibly likeable." Nearing the end of Act 1, "Gustave is my favourite character, easily." Just after finishing Act 1, "Inconsolable sobbing."
The bold and beautiful CO: Expedition 33 is a game that takes plenty of risks, with one of the wildest being the decision to kill off the protagonist at the end of the first act. Gustave is such a great leading man that you get the feeling he's going to make it all the way, which is why this moment comes so out of nowhere. It's also pretty brutal at that.
Watching as this hopeful character, a brotherly figure to the young Maelle, dies at the hands of the mysterious older man will leave you reaching for the tissues. His death acts as the first part of unravelling the truth of what's really going on in this world, but that doesn't stop it from hurting.
