3. Anachronox
Developer: Ion Storm
Platform: PC
The premise: The only western RPG to make this list, Anachronox follows a private investigator looking for work in the slums of a grimy planet near a 'jump gate' hub. Hugely ambitious, the game features huge city environments and a bunch of memorable characters.
It gets weirder: By far the strangest moment in Anachronox, is when the 'character' Planet Democratus joins the party. Earlier in the game, the player helps to repel alien invaders on Democratus, and in return the planet's council shrinks the entire planet to roughly the size of a human. This means you've literally got an entire, floating planet fighting by your side, that attacks enemies using tiny little missiles and lasers. There's still millions of people living on the miniaturised Democratus too, and they're somehow convinced that having the entire planet (and themselves) shrink down to a thousandth of the original size is a good thing.
