7. Facebook Buy The Oculus Rift

Not that everything has to be about the societal ills of the world being amplified or reflected in art. There€™s also good old fashioned people being ripped off, or else interesting new start-ups being absorbed by larger corporations who will probably sap all of the interesting-ness out of them. With the news earlier this year that Facebook were buying up the developers of revolutionary virtual reality headset the Oculus Rift, you got a two-for-one on both! Honestly, what are Facebook planning on even doing with the technology? Some at the time speculated about some crazy new way to interact wth your least favourite social network, or else some more immersive take on FarmVille, but that wasn€™t the real scandal. Well, it was part of it, anyway. Just not the whole story. Y€™see, the Oculus Rift came about thanks to a phenomenally successful crowdfunding campaign organised around Kickstarter. That means the company couldn€™t have existed, much less reached such levels of popularity, if it weren€™t for excited gamers kicking in a few sheckles. So discovering the company had been sold to Zuckerberg for a cool $400 million in cash and $1.6 billion in Facebook stock had them wondering if maybe they should be entitled to some of the spoils€?
