10 Scandals That DESTROYED Fallout 76

3. The Outer Worlds Twisting The Knife

Obsidian

You can’t really blame Obsidian for this one too much, it was just a combination of Fallout 76’s self-inflicted terrible launch and unlucky timing. Still, it didn’t help Bethesda’s press to have The Outer Worlds so publicly twist the knife.

Last year’s Game Awards saw a heap of trailers drop, and despite the press garnered by Crash Team Racing, Dragon Age and Christopher Judge’s snazzy suit, The Outer Worlds grabbed the lion’s share of the hype. A new, space-based RPG by Obsidian, the intriguing locales and slightly Rick Sanchez looking character model got everybody talking.

However, as is Obsidian’s right, they mentioned their past successes with various full-screen captions. The most controversial bragged about being ‘the original creators of Fallout’; the trailer was likely designed before Fallout 76 even dropped, but by the time it came out it seemed like maliciously kicking a game while it was down, and many fans online fully supported this mindset.

Ironically, Obsidian probably made the claim hoping to cash in on Fallout 76’s great sales. Whether or not the decision was made to keep it in there despite the increased negativity it would generate towards Bethesda, only Obsidian knows.
