10 Scandals That DESTROYED Fallout 76

4. Predatory & Expensive Customisable Options

Fallout 76
Bethesda

This was briefly touched on in the Repair Kits entry, but it’s worthy of its own entry for how much of a sour taste it left for players.

It’s to be expected, unfortunately, that a game like this comes with microtransactions these days. While you can debate the legitimacy of having no pay-to-win items and only selling cosmetics, the fact still remains that you’re buying a base game for full price only to immediately have content locked behind a paywall.

Gamers have made their peace with DLC, especially if it’s the quality of Horizon’s The Frozen Wilds, Witcher’s Blood & Wine or Mass Effect’s Citadel package. However, Fallout 76’s paid content was nothing of the sort, and after investing in a game that sold way below expectations and kept haemorrhaging customers, those who stuck around were probably expecting a little leeway.

You can earn currency by completing daily or weekly challenges, but to purchase enough ‘atoms’ with real money, it would cost around $240 to get everything in the game. The 500 atoms you got at preorder (equivalent to $5) wasn’t even enough to allow you to paint your PIP-Boy a different colour.
