10 SEGA Mega Drive Games That Deserve a 21st Century Overhaul
5. Ecco The Dolphin (Genre: Underwater Action-Adventure)
70% of the surface of Earth is covered by ocean, yet very few games offer us the chance to explore the depths beneath. ABZU recently gave us a taste, but this was quite different from the original underwater explorer – the action-adventure, Ecco the Dolphin.
Ecco was ingenious in not only realising explorable underwater ocean environments, complete with the strange and wonderful flora and fauna, but Ecco's quick movement and sonar ability made for some of the most unique combat in early console gaming.
We could no longer rely on strange alien weapons, or hand-fist combos, but we were instead flung into a world where gravity played no part and we had to learn to live and fight like an sea mammal.
A 3D, open-ocean game would be immensely popular – not just for the ABZU fans that enjoy the beautiful sights and senses of a world in the deep blue, but the for action lovers that want to experience something unique. The game could employ unlockable abilities that allow Ecco to battle tougher foes and explore deeper seas, calling on pods of dolphins and whales to ally them in battle against monstrous giant squids and vicious sharks.
