10 SEGA Mega Drive Games That Deserve a 21st Century Overhaul

6. Flashback (Genre: Third-Person Shooter Platformer)

Okay, so this one was remade as recently as 2013 - but it wasn't well received because it tried to copy the original 2D platform style in a modern era of gaming. Flashback is an example of why, if classics are to be remade, they mustn't be copied, but brought into the 21st Century.

Once regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, Flashback was all the best parts of Prince of Persia meets Independence Day meets Total Recall (the 1990 version).

The slick rotoscoped graphics and superb sound meant the game stood out right from release, with the action gameplay, realistic physics, and intriguing spatial puzzles all marking this game out as an instant classic.

Conrad was our early Nathan Drake and Lara Croft, only from the future. Taking the best elements of Uncharted and Tomb Raider – the puzzles, the action, the 3D-platforming, and the survival – but combining it with the cyber punk environment, future weaponry, and the unique 1950s-inspired Sci-Fi plot, would appeal to both long time fans and lovers of the third-person shooter, platformer genre.

Flashback was more nuanced than the Uncharted series, so it would do well to tone down the action (something the remake got wrong), while keeping similar gameplay mechanics.
