10 Spiritual Successors To Classic Video Games
4. Demon's Souls Succeeds King's Field
Youngsters are probably more familiar with Demon's Souls as a recent PS5 exclusive, but the story doesn't begin there, oh no.
Back in the '90s, a dark fantasy RPG called King's Field set in a medieval world was released on the Playstation in Japan only (although subsequent sequels did make it to the West). It too gained a reputation for being a little on the difficult side.
In general, it was a much slower and clunkier affair while presented in the first person. Other than that, Demon's Souls could be a blood relative. The series just became a third person action RPG with faster gameplay, whilst retaining the dark and bleak atmosphere.
It feels like a natural sequel and true evolutionary successor for King's Field, even some of the enemies, like Zombified miners wielding pick axes, as well as weapons like the Moonlight Sword, appear across the series.
Not only did Souls receive the PS5 upgrade, but it later received its own spiritual successor in the form of Dark Souls, which would change the gaming landscape from then on.
Who knows, maybe an HD remake of King's Field is now in order?
