5. Dishonored Succeeds Thief

Thief was one of the pioneers of modern stealth gaming, although it probably looks a little dated and clunky by todays standards. Plus, the quality of the most recent instalment was very hit and miss.

Well, Dishonored to the rescue! It may be faster and more flashy, but it does provide a gritty, gothic, fantasy world in which to explore and sneak. Thief doesn't measure up in terms of the levels of fun, especially in its most recent form.

There's magic to learn, weapons and traps to master, a steep learning curve, and multiple difficulty levels to conquer. Not to mention, it features some of the best and most creative and ingenious levels ever designed. The story's not too bad either; nothing ground breaking, but it does help set a distinctive tone partnered with the atmospheric music. Sadly, Dishonored looks like it may need its own spiritual revival; you still can play it, though, at a reasonable price, so don the mask and get pilfering.

Plus, if this intrigues you, check out New Blood Interactive's Gloomwood, which aims for a more chilling and horror based direction.
