It's a dark, stormy night. The doors to a grand but ominous old house swing open. The fires are crackling, but the atmosphere is frosty. The mansion creaks with history and tension alike. What's not to love?

Lambda One has the makings of a chilling period drama. The slightly creepy kids, a sinister housekeeper, a handsome but surly widower...and then enters the restrained but defiant governess, complete with corset and perfect hair. Add to that the stirrings of a spooky story, a recently deceased wife that the daughter still speaks to and the instruction to never, under any circumstances, go up to the fourth floor...let's go!

This slow-burn saga would definitely require patience, but it would be worth it to explore some of the shadowy corridors and dusty rooms, no doubt filled with shrouded furniture and mirrors for a touch of ambience. But despite the carefully constructed opening gambit, we never find out what happens in this melodrama.

Voyager teases us with these delicious snippets, imbued with the essence of gothic romance, but then leaves us hanging. Honestly, it would be worth playing this holonovel just to see how the story ends. We're hoping for a haunting, a tempestuous liaison and a bittersweet ending. Frankly, if there isn't at least one ghost upstairs, we're asking for a refund.

Katherine has been boldly going since childhood, when the BBC Two 6pm Star Trek slot changed her life. She was drawn in by the franchise's optimism, compassion and flair for character-driven storytelling. She's been writing stories since she could pick up a pen and has spent far too much time immersed in television, films, books, music and theatre. She loves any chance to talk or write about her favourite fandoms, of which there are many. When not busy writing, she can usually be found playing video games or explaining why the concept of a transporter is actually terrifying.
