The player uses glitches to exploit redundancies in the game, such as terrible hit detection which means Mario can dive through vines unharmed if timed correctly, and jumping backwards across the screen which confuses the game engine. What's really impressive is the dedication put into pushing this game right to its limit; in a comment attached to the above video, the player notes just how intricately planned the run is - at one point, he has to jump in a way that has Mario catch his foot on the 16th pixel of a block.
