Sometimes the whole appeal of a true final boss IS how they come completely out of left field. Case in point, the famous final boss of Pokemon Gold and Silver.

Frankly, the whole second half of the game comes out of nowhere in the best way. After completing the Johto Pokemon league, you're given a chance to hop a boat back to Kanto to become a two time champion of the previous game's world.

But just when you think that's the end of it, you hear that there's the ultimate challenger waiting for you on top of a mountain. And when you get to the top, who should be waiting but Red, the protagonist of the original game.

The battle is hard, one of the hardest in the entire franchise to this day. Red makes you earn your victory and subsequent playground bragging rights here, throwing some of the strongest non legendary Pokemon in the game at you.

One of the few times having a final boss with zero build up actually paid off spectacularly.
