10 Terrible Video Game Movies That Ruined Iconic Characters

9. Mewtwo - Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

Resident Evil Wesker
Warner Bros.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu sounded like a really bad idea on paper. (I mean, who genuinely thought Ryan Reynolds' voice would work for Pikachu?) The end result was far from flawless but the movie was inventive, funny, and charming. Also, it's one of the few movies where the characters look EXACTLY like how they appear in the game!

However, the film mismanaged the series' most famous villain, Mewtwo. After being created by a group of deranged scientists, Mewtwo was imprisoned in a laboratory where he was prodded and tested for years. Consumed by rage, the powerful being eventually broke free and swore vengeance on the world.

Since the film begins with the infamous Pokemon escaping from his lab, you would assume it's only a matter of time before he declares war on mankind. However, this Mewtwo is a good guy, who only turns bad briefly after he is brainwashed by a scientist. Annoyingly, depicting Mewtwo this way makes him come across as unintimidating and weak. And considering Mewtwo is among the most powerful Pokemon ever, it should be far from easy for him to be imprisoned or mind-controlled.
