6. Max Payne 3

Max Payne 3 could have been a good game - if it wasn't continuing Max's story, that is. Max Payne 3, developed by Rockstar, produced stunning visuals, seamless mechanics, and a beautiful environment that detailed every aspect of Sao Paulo to perfection. It got the "Bullet Time" right and it even incorporated some new editions to the Max Payne mechanics that were innovative and enjoyable - multiplayer and duel weapons. But it failed on story. Anyone who is a Max Payne fan knows that. Max Payne is the definition of noir storytelling in video games. That means we get dark dialogue that pokes fun at itself - cliche and cheesy to the point that we know that's what the writer is going for. That means we get snow, New York, goons with hilarious banter, Dick Justice, Lords and Ladies, and an intriguing story that's plausible. We didn't get that. And none of Max's past events were ever detailed in full to the gamer in Max Payne 3. It is never revealed what happened to Mona Sax, and why it make sense for Max to leave New York at all. Fans aren't asking to recreate Max Payne 1 or 2, but they were asking to stay true to the Max Payne character - and they didn't. Sam Lake didn't write Max Payne 3 and that should tell gamers something. Regardless, Rockstar sold over four million copies of the game. They got their money's worth.
