10 Terrible Video Games You Didn't Realise Were Wildly Successful
7. Thief
When Thief: The Dark Project came out, gamers were loving it. There was stealth, a cool medieval steampunk city to crawl around in, and challenged the first-person shooter market with its emphasis on evasion and not confrontation - light and sound were your enemies, not mountains of bullets. It was the first 3D stealth game for the PC and influenced such games as Splinter Cell and the Hitman series. The game was brilliant because it made your experience stealthing around terrifying, and more importantly, real; it was the first time the idea of NPCs became suspicious about noise or a flicker of light - Metal Gear Solid and Half-life were also forerunners in these categories. In short, Thief: The Dark Project was an amazing game that inspired and innovated every facet of the gaming community. That being said, Thief for the PS4/Xbox One isn't the same. Many fans are disappointed at the return of the series to be such a downer. With new engines and mechanics, we expected something more than what we got. Though graphics are, of course, phenomenal, as well as the stealth play and level designs, the story is sub-par, the city layout is confusing, and the change is voice actors portray Garret not the way we'd hoped. But despite all this, the game is currently at the top of the charts in sales and continues to rake in the money.
