10 Terrifying Video Game Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For

1. The Last of Us Part II - The Rat King

Coming in hot is the most recent entry from Naughty Dog, the sequel to 2013's The Last of Us.

Regardless of your opinion of the whole game, let's all agree on one thing: the Rat King boss fight absolutely sucks.

We'd seen Bloaters, Shamblers and Stalkers that affix themselves to walls, but this... this is something else.

This gross abomination/amalgamation of a boss monster wasn't what I was expecting to find in an abandoned field hospital. Alright, I was anticipating something after that hole in the wall, but not that.

Not something that has an insane, one-hit-kill reach in a small, labyrinthine basement. Okay, it's not that convoluted, but when you're panicking between weapon switching and ammo finding, it certainly feels like it.

Boss fights in The Last(s) of Us are a rarity, the games generally favouring a horde defense in tight situations. So to be literally forced into one through means of story progression wasn't just jarring, it was terrifying.

I can look back and say, "Yeah, it's fitting that this would have happened" but then... it was all panic and frustration.
