10 Terrifying Video Game Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For
3. Inside - The Underwater Child/Demon
It doesn't always need to be loud, colourful and in-your-face to be terrifying. Just ask Playdead, they're masters of unnerving terror.
Off the back of Limbo, we had Inside. What starts as a minimal looking game about a boy on a mission to... run right, becomes something much, much worse.
Yet it's not some big bad monstrosity that produces the terrifying moment. Hell, you become the terrifying moment later on.
No, instead it's an underwater human/demon thing that pursues our protagonist about the midway stages that unnerves me. Maybe it's my own personal fear of drowning exacerbating it, but still.
What makes it worse is that with no indicator of friend or foe, when this thing comes after you, you don't know what it's intentions are. Then, when it holds you underwater as your life ebbs out of you, then you know.
It gets worse later, when you have to let it grab you. Playdead already cemented the fear in us, so to succumb and let this straggly-haired nightmare drown you had me tighter than a fisherman's knot.
