3. Progression For The Sake Of Progression

There was once a time when it wasn't considered mandatory for every game created to have some sort of level system. This was also the time when there were linear games that felt no need to make you traverse a map 3 times bigger than Texas, just to pick up some random guys dry cleaning.

Now however if you aren't levelling up constantly in a game, what's going to make you come back? While games like Fortnite and Black Ops 4's Blackout mode do reward the player for levelling it all just seems unnecessary. The point of leveling was originally intended to let the player watch their power grow in a tangible way.

However in competitive multiplayer games such as these doing this would simply encourage level 100 trolls to roam lobbies looking for fresh players to stomp on.

The level system exists simply due to necessity at this point, a box to be checked in every slightly RPG-esque game released and frankly it shows. The only reward here being that of cosmetics, like a slightly more orange tint for your gun, or a chance for some free lootboxes, speaking of which...
