10 Things That Killed Mortal Kombat 1
5. Much Healthier Competition
With hindsight, it's safe to say that Mortal Kombat 1 was released far before it was ready and as we've mentioned previously, this is more than likely the result of Warner Bros. concerns over its competitors overshadowing it.
By the time of Mortal Kombat 1's launch, Street Fighter 6 was already well-established as a great fighting game that offered up an experience that could appeal to both the casual and hardcore audiences. That accessibility coupled with its striking visuals, the much lauded Drive Gauge system and the inclusion of modern controls meant it had so much to offer players from day one.
And then looming on the horizon was Tekken 8's lauch, generating considerable hype with each subsequent trailer.
Tekken 8 did eventually come out and made many-a Mortal Kombat player green with envy, seeing its robust suites of training modes, near-endless character customisation options and much-celebrated Replay system that allowed players to jump back into any of their previous bouts to learn where they went wrong and develop necessary skills to dominate the online landscape.
When comparing the launch version of Mortal Kombat 1 to both other titles, it's clear to see why so many found themselves jumping ship to a rival franchise.
