10 Things That Killed Mortal Kombat 1

4. Half-Baked Invasions Mode

In lieu of the much-loved Krypt or Konquest modes of old, the folks at NetherRealm Studios gave us something new this time around with Invasions.

The idea was that players would move their chosen character through a board game-like map that would allow them to explore the world of Mortal Kombat whilst completing challenges - think Mario Party but with more decapitations and you're about halfway there.

During the game's pre-release period, Invasions were hyped up to be these fun excursions throughout the Mortal Kombat universe, packed full of challenges and wonder - but ultimately they turned out be very bland and boring. The fights themselves were either insanely easy or teeth-grindingly hard, and every so often you'd maybe get a challenge that involved surviving wave after wave of projectiles to mix things up. Beyond that, Invasions had basically nothing else to offer.

It's worth mentioning that Invasions did improve over time, with a larger variety of challenges on offer and more fun mechanics introduced to keep players engaged. Sadly though, it was too little too late, as by the time these improvements were made, most players had jumped over to the much more fun and rewarding Towers of Time.
