10 Things That Killed Mortal Kombat 1

6. The Best Cosmetics Are Locked Behind Paywalls

Now this one isn't a complaint that Mortal Kombat suffers from exclusively. Paid DLC skins are the scourge of the fighting game genre and the big-wigs behind these games know that diehard fans are more likely to shell out real-world money for the best skins for their beloved characters.

And of course, Mortal Kombat 1 suffered badly from this. Looking in the storefront you'll see all manner of classic costumes from previous games and new additions that tie-in with the game's Invasions mode or guest character debuts - those Conan skins for Ashrah, Baraka and Geras were especially awesome by the way.

All of the best skins had to be purchased with Dragon Krystals, an in-game currency that was quite hard to obtain in the game's early days, so players had to make do with the free skins, most of which were bafflingly awful palette swaps of fairly bland costumes.

The inclusion of Towers of Time did make it easier to grind for Dragon Krystals (offering up 75 every fortnight via in-game challenges) so it did become easier to obtain the cooler skins but the store kept the rotating model meaning that it's easy for players to miss the time windows when purchases are available.
