10 Things That Killed Mortal Kombat 1
3. Lack Of Kontent
The game launched with a story mode, online play, training and the aforementioned Invasions - and that was it.
The training mode was incredibly robust and provided all the right tools for players to lab to their hearts content, but the bolted-on combo trials felt a bit lacking when compared to the thoroughly comprehensive ones found in Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. Offering players nine combos to master and little else beyond that.
As mentioned previously, the first batch of Invasions left a lot to be desired and once you'd finished the divisive story mode there was very little else left for those who didn't fancy getting their backsides handed to them online.
Eventually NetherRealm gifted us with Towers of Time, which included a whole host of seasonal rewards and crazy fight conditions that made for some surprisingly engaging gameplay. This inclusion, coupled with far better realised Invasion modes and Titan boss fights against incredibly strong variants of pre-existing characters did go some ways to rectifying many of the ill feelings fans had for the game at launch.
It's just a shame that these much-welcomed additions didn't bring back players who'd tossed the game aside in favour of more complete packages.
