10 Things The Next Console Generation Needs
7. Advanced Game Streaming Capabilities
With Microsoft announcing that they see their main rivals next generation as Amazon and Google, it's clear that the ability to stream games from the web will be a priority of the new consoles.
So, what should we expect? For starters, as soon as we hit the buy button and the game is available to play, we should be able to play a lower resolution version of those games via streaming while we wait for it to download. Demos for games would be streamed, allowing players to try a game on a whim without having to wait for a download.
Most interesting is Console Streaming, which Microsoft is currently trialing for Xbox One players. This allows players to stream games from their home console to a phone or other device that can act as a dumb display when paired with an Xbox controller. With a long-rumoured streaming-focused version of the next-generation Xbox, it's thought that Microsoft may not be limiting themselves to the web. Xbox Series X could be capable of acting as a server that can stream its own downloaded games (likely only in 1080p and 30fps) to this cheaper model, allowing one download to serve an entire household.
