10 Things The Next Console Generation Needs
8. Separate RAM For Console Operations
If you have only one lot of RAM for everything, then more intensive console games will run slower and encounter problems when it's doing things like updating many apps or handling a lot of downloads.
Even being left on for a while can fill up that RAM that would otherwise be used for gaming. If, however you use two sets of RAM (one for console operation and a much larger one for games) then you remove this problem.
So, it seems like it would be stupid to create a console with combination RAM to be used for basic operations as well as games. And yet, the Xbox One this generation did exactly that. This, despite the fact that there were games that worked on Xbox 360 but didn't on PS3 because the Sony console was also running single RAM architecture, leaving memory-hungry games like Skyrim eventually having too much in their save files for the console to handle.
When the next generation consoles come along, single RAM architecture won't be a big deal at first. But when games start using more and more of the resources available, those that separate out their RAM usage will find themselves better equipped for the future.
