10 Things You Didn't Know About Fallout 4

First appearing in the series' debut, the Mysterious Stranger has become something of a stalwart of the Fallout franchise and has featured in every main series game to date.

Since Fallout 3, the Mysterious Stranger has taken the form of a trenchcoat clad man carrying a 44. Magnum, similar to a stereotypical detective in a film noir movie. The stranger appears when the player is most in need, showing up in V.A.T.S to deliver a fatal blow accompanied by the sound of a lone guitar chord before disappearing once more.

Despite the Stranger being, well... mysterious (the clue's in the name), it appears that Diamond City's premier investigator Nick Valentine has taken it upon himself to uncover the character's true identity.

If the player travels to the Valentine Detective Agency they can find a note on the floor the details everything Valentine knows about the mysterious man, and references previous Fallout titles.

Also, if the player has Valentine as a companion, he will exclaim in frustration whenever the Stranger inevitably disappears after offering support in combat.
