10 Times Drinking Went Horribly Wrong In Video Games
2. Pokémon Red/Green - Viridian City
In the first western Pokémon games, Red and Blue, the player finds their path blocked in Viridian City by an old man who is unable to move until he has had his morning coffee. In practice this is to contain the player within the first couple of towns whilst running an errand for Professor Oak as a basic tutorial.
This is one example of how the game was censored after its original Japanese releases. In these games, known as Red and Green, it is made clear that the old man is actually passed out drunk following a wild night in Kanto. Quite how the old man managed to get in such a state in the city with two houses (one of which is converted into a school) and no pubs or obvious source to buy alcohol remains a mystery.
The old man will remain prostrate on the floor until a package for Oak is returned to him in Pallet Town, meaning that without progress by the player, one man's overindulgence has left Viridian City entirely inaccessible to the rest of the region for the forseeable future.
