10 Times Horror Video Games Got Truly Twisted
2. Dead Space 2 - Eye Surgery
When it comes to body horror in video games, you don't get any more creatively grotesque than the Dead Space series. Thanks to its combination of unsettling creature design and levels of stomach-churning violence, this sci-fi survival-horror trilogy has created some of the most memorable moments in gaming history.
While there's no shortage of disturbing moments from this trilogy that could make this list, none have managed to reach the nail-biting tension and visceral repulsion that came with Dead Space 2’s now legendary eye surgery sequence.
Late in protagonist Isaac Clarke’s ordeal, he finds himself needing to acquire vital information about the necromorphs that have infested the space station he finds himself trapped on. To both his and player’s dismay, however, the only way this data can be obtained is via an injection to his brain directly through his eyeball.
What follows is a heart-pounding sequence in which players must carefully guide the large needle into the engineer’s eye by keeping a laser trained on the centre of his twitching eyeball. With the score building in tension while the camera pans in as the needle gets closer, the developers ensure players feel every ounce of this scene's uncomfortable content.
