6. Shadow The Hedgehog
2005 must have been the year that games thought they needed to reinvent themselves with an edgy new look. Between Tomb Raider trying to be cool with Angel of Darkness and Conker's transforming from a cuddly mascot into a foul-mouthed action hero, every game was ditching its kid-friendly roots.
Attempting to follow suit, the Sonic the Hedgehog series tried to get in on the action by launching Sonic's darker alternative, Shadow, into the spotlight.
Shadow the Hedgehog was much more of an action game than the main series ever was, featuring a protagonist that did as much shooting as he did platforming. The new approach didn't quite gel however, as the staples of the franchise that fans loved the most came across as awkward and forced when performed by this new lead character.
As a result Shadow only enjoyed one game in the limelight, and the series attempted to go back to basics with Sonic the Hedgehog's debut on the seventh generation of consoles in 2006, but somehow that managed to be even worse...
