3. Albert Wesker - Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Now we have the definitive antagonist in the Resident Evil series. In Code Veronica, franchise icon Albert Wesker made his return. During the earlier days of the franchise the antagonist stuck to the shadows, carefully influencing events in his favour.

After surviving his injuries from the tyrant in the first Resident Evil, he found himself imbued with his own supernatural powers and set about covering up the Umbrella Corporation's unsavoury deeds.

Code Veronica marked the moment the antagonist began to play a more active role as he infiltrated the Umbrella facility on Rockford Island. Simultaneously, Chris Redfield was searching for his sister Claire and the two foes clashed in the closing moments of the game.

It was a rough fight, with the villain easily out matching the player character in both strength and speed. That is, until Chris dropped a ton of girders to incapacitate the super-powered foe.

Wesker, cut off from finishing Chris off, chose to let him live and escape the collapsing facility, while promising they two would meet again. After slinking away into the background once again, he would eventually make his grand return in Resident Evil 5 and a fiery confrontation between him and Chris came to fruition.
