10 Times Video Games Embraced Their Glitches
10. Runescape - The Falador Massacre
Back in 2006 when MMORPG Runescape 2 was still just a baby, a player named ‘Cursed You’ had just achieved a level of 99 construction. After such an arduous task, Mr You hosted a party at his in-game house in Falador. Players that attended the virtual bash had a slew of activities to choose from, one of which included the fighting ring, allowing two members at a time to have a friendly PvP fight.
However, after leaving Cursed You’s house, the players that took part in the friendly punch ups soon found they had the game-breaking ability to attack others. After a few minutes, anarchy erupted in the streets of Falador as groups of party-goers ran around slaughtering uninvolved players. As those infected with the glitch spread to other major gathering spots like Edgeville, Rimmington and Draynor Village, hundreds more innocent players were killed.
The glitch, which was later found to be an error in the construction skill, lasted around an hour before moderators found and dealt with the culprits. Some received black marks against their names, whilst others suffered a lifetime ban on their account. Cursed You later received a lifetime ban for an unrelated incident. The glitch that took place on 6 June 2006, which has become more commonly known as the ‘666 glitch,’ is now a part of Runescape's lore and is recognised as a major historical event called ‘The Falador Massacre’. Canonically, the event took place between the Siege of Falador and the start of the Sixth Age.
