6. Sacrifce Yourself - Saints Row IV

There are two things that can be said about Saints Row IV: one, it doesn’t take itself too seriously; two, it doesn’t take other games too seriously either.

Saints Row IV is filled with little gags and references to other gaming franchises, like romance options parodying the relationship system in Mass Effect and a mission making fun of Call of Duty.

Naturally, the list of jokes made at the expense of the gaming industry also includes a jab at the trope of fake choices. It happens during the mission where the player attempts to storm Zinyak’s mothership in order to rescue the hacker, Matt Miller.

As you navigate through the ship, you will eventually come across a room where Zinyak gives you a choice. You can continue to fight and save Matt, or, if you trust Zinyak’s word, you can give up, and in exchange, Zinyak will spare humanity from his conquest.

Of course, Zinyak isn’t to be trusted, and the moment you step through the “give up” door, your character is disintegrated. You get a game over, and you’re immediately brought back to your last checkpoint.

Well, the choice was clearly a joke. And if you fell for it, the joke’s on you!
