10 Times Video Games Totally Broke Your Trust

4. Sayori's Suicide - Doki Doki Literature Club

Resident Evil 3
Team Salvato

By now, the big plot twist of Doki Doki Literature Club is widely known within the gaming community. However, it's such a brilliant example of a developer subverting the expectations of their audience that it deserves to be mentioned here.

The game poses as your typical cutesy anime visual novel about a young guy joining a literature club with four potential romantic interests. The first half of the game consists of getting better acquainted with the club members, writing poems for them, and picking which one will become your significant other. Then, one day, your character decides to check up on their childhood friend Sayori, who hasn't been showing up to the club, and finds the girl's lifeless body hanging off a rope in her room...

From then on, the game turns into a full-time horror, with the girls mutilating themselves, glitching out, and messing with your computer files to add some personal touches of trauma.

The plot twist comes so late in the game that, at the time of its release, it got a lot of people fooled and then traumatized for life. Even now, there are some people who fall for Doki Doki's innocent aesthetic.
