4. John & River (To The Moon)
I wrote a song. It's for you. - John
To The Moon wasn't much of a game. It had no real enemies and gameplay was mostly item collecting and simple puzzle solving. What it did have, was a moving story. Where most games on this list have romance as a side-plot to the main story, romance was definitely the main story in To The Moon. It has a simple premise. John, having grown old, wants his memories altered to include a fake memory of having flown to the moon (he knew he would be faking his memories), for reasons he didn't understand. He wanted this done as a dying wish. And so you play as two doctors trying to accomplish this desire, and in the process learn of the love between John and River. River had a mental condition. One that made it hard for her to express herself properly. John still loved her, and stayed with her until they grew old together. One thing that bothered him though, was that River kept making origami rabbits and asking him what he saw in them, for which he had no satisfying answer. You see, John himself had lost his memories when he was young. A tragic incident befell his family and consequently he lost his memory. Memories that actually included the first time he met River, where a promise was made for them to meet on the moon should they ever be separated. What River had been trying to accomplish all this while as they grew old together was to somehow force John to remember his true past, although she failed. It's a touching love story between two people who had various tragic issues to deal with.
